Buffalo Wax Batik Blouse

Handmade batik shirt created by the Gejia people of Matang village in Guizhou, China, using a traditional wax-resist dyeing technique passed down through generations. Melted buffalo wax is carefully applied by hand before the fabric is dyed in rich indigo, revealing intricate patterns once the wax is removed.

The Gejia - an unrecognized subgroup closely related to the Miao - are especially renowned for their batik traditions. Motifs inspired by buffalo, butterflies, flowers, birds, and ancestral mythology appear throughout their work, reflecting themes of nature, protection, migration, and daily life. 

This piece carries the irregularities and beauty of true handmade work.
