Yelang Castle Ceramic Figures

CERAMICS:

Description

Whimsical ceramic figures inspired by the spirit of Yelang Castle — lions, Nuo faces, and sculptural vases, each entirely one of a kind. Made in the traditional Yazhou ceramic style of Guizhou, the pieces feature rustic forms, natural glaze variations, and hand-built character shaped by the unpredictability of the kiln.

Playful, expressive, and full of personality — small fragments of the imaginative world of Yelang Castle's legendary founder, artist Song Peilun.

  • Origin: Contemporary, made by artisans at the Yelang Castle, Guizhou, China.
  • Materials: Yazhou pottery (牙舟陶), local clay and ice-crackle glazed finish
  • Care: be gentle
  • Please note: every piece is handmade. Therefore there are slight variations in color and glaze. Each ceramic will differ slightly from the images shown. This is why each one is unique and one of a kind.

More about the Nuo faces:

Nuo masks have a long history in Guizhou, where they are used in ritual and performance to embody spirits, deities and other figures. Their exaggerated faces are not simply decorative: traditionally, the mask acts as a bridge between the human and spirit worlds.

Nuo culture became an important influence on artist Song Peilun and the strange, expressive faces that populate Yelang Valley. These handmade ceramic Nuo faces carry that visual language into a new form. Part ancient tradition, part contemporary interpretation.
